A Wild Wisconsin Wedding | Heidi Hanson Photography

I’ve known Becky for almost three years now and Kwong for just about the same amount of time.  I was really happy when these two were going to say I do in Wisconsin and they wanted me to photograph their big day.  And then when they asked my kids to be part of their wedding party…a little less happy – knowing we would have to make the trek to Wisconsin as a family….yep 22 hours via car!  But we did it!  In fact we spent more time in the car then actually in Wisconsin! But all kidding aside we had a blast!

These two have certainly had their ups and downs and it wasn’t quite love at first site for the bride; in fact they often joke that she is the ‘boy’ in the relationship.  You know, the one that doesn’t really make the plans, or care about the details, or get emotional attached that easily.  When Kwong proposed to her in a quaint little Vermont Inn, she didn’t even say yes…but she did accept the ring!!  We kept calling her the Runaway Bride….the running joke was that she wouldn’t say yes at the ceremony!  During the planning process, she was referred to as the Anti-Bride because she kept saying she had months and months to plan, completely forgetting those months, were flying by and ultimately it was days she had left.

To say these two are perfect for each other is a gross understatement.  They are always laughing, smiling, sharing rare illnesses and unique allergies.  Yes, in the months leading up to their nuptials there were multiple visits to the emergency room, flea attacks and many more rare instances of unusual ailments….they are truly a perfect match.  This Mid-Western girl and this Tawain/Cambodian/Malaysian/Chinese boy; this Green Bay Packer and this Jets Fan….

So we made our way halfway way across the country to this little Hodag part of the country to Rhinelander, WI (population of 7,600) to witness and photograph this union of two amazing people, two friends who truly are perfect in every way for each other.

The day went exactly as expected multiple trips to Walmart, a ceremony that started two hours late, lots of laughs, some homemade moonshine and so much dancing.  It was a perfect day…a perfect Becky and Kwong day.  Here are some of my favorite photos

Ceremony Location:  Private Residence

Ecuador Bound | Heidi Hanson Photography

ecuador

So I’m heading South…That’s right to South America, to Tena, Ecuador.  Yikes!  I’m wicked excited; and at the same time a little nervous.  I’m going on a mission trip (Simply Love) with complete strangers (except for the organizer, Alicia from No Eye Has Seen Photography), to work for this amazing organization, Bless an Orphan.  We will be staying at the orphanage working with the children  and doing minor construction projects.  We will also be delivering food and clothing to local villages and installing a water well in one village which will give them access to clean water – a major milestone.

I think the most anxiety I’m having right now is that my husband, who normally travels and leaves me home with the kids for weeks/months on end; has so graciously taken time off of work to take care of the kids SOLO.  I’m not sure how this is going to work. Considering he doesn’t know where any of their things are – the only good thing is it is school vacation week!  So he can’t mess up that bad…..or can he???

What I’m most looking forward to?  Rolling up my sleeves and get dirty.  I’ve never done something like this, sure I’ve done Habitat for Humanity while in college, but nothing quite like this.  I can’t wait to see all the little smiling faces of the children we help, truly make a difference.  Show my children that this is something they should be doing.  And maybe one day the four of us can do something like this together.

Please read more about my trip here and how you can help me raise funds to head down to Ecuador!

Halloween 2013 | Heidi Hanson Photography

Those of you who know me, know that when it comes time for costumes for the Hanson clan, the kids have to match or at least have the same ‘theme.”  One year we did pirates, one year Spiderman and SpiderGirl, another year Power Rangers…the only exception was one year we did a Swamp Monster and a Devil just because the Swamp Monster costume was AMAZING and the devil costume was too cute.

So this year when Stryder said he wanted to be a Vampire (no blood – LONG story) and Berkeley originally said she did too – I was like sweet!  This is easy.  Then of course she changed her mind. So we searched online for hours and hours and finally found something that was suitable – Baterina – Aka Bat Princess

Which totes works because Vampires turn into bats……..

The Walking Dead | Heidi Hanson Photography

No, not the TV show, in fact I’ve never even watched The Walking Dead.

The Walking Dead refers to what my husband called me as I mustered up enough energy to crawl myself out of bed, stumble down the ridiculously long hallway and stagger into the kitchen and grab some orange juice this morning after being sick for the last three days.  The Walking Dead he called me, the kids just sort of looked at me and said mommy why don’t you go back to bed daddy’s got this.  However clearly daddy didn’t get this.  With today being Halloween parade day at school and party day, there were clear definitions of what could and couldn’t be worn/done at school.  I had everything labeled ready to go, the night before. Kids and I had multiple conversations on what they were doing, wearing, carrying on the bus, etc.

Well of course no one listened.  As I barely made it back down our lengthy hallway and back into bed chugging the orange juice, apparently as a zombie, I was interrupted at least seven times with questions on what Miss B was wearing and what her costume was again.  Because she couldn’t wear her “real Halloween” costume to school (mommy’s orders) she is too much of a hot mess and I knew it was going to get chocolate or dirt or something spilled all over it and be a disgusting mess for real Halloween tonight and even if I felt 1000% I wasn’t going to wash a Halloween costume…no thanks.  Two minutes before they had to walk down to the bus, Stryder asks me if he can get his costume over his ridiculously thick sweat shirt that he is wearing, I tell him no way. So I tell him to go and get a long-sleeve shirt on. I’m not sure how these kids made it on the bus…however I give up trying to go back to bed and decide to go and take a shower because it has been a few (okay 3) days since I have taken a shower…so I guess I may have looked like this…

Image

Which I thoroughly have to disagree with…the kids would’ve bolted out the door

But really I think I looked more like this….

Ironically though, they did leave every light on in the house and the TV on…something my husband does get quite annoyed at for me if that happens (which it NEVER does)….

Happy Halloween everyone

9 months, 28 pounds and three hair colors | Heidi Hanson Photography

I know it has been a while since I blogged, but that means I’m busy right?  Sure, let’s go with that 🙂  Really I have been busy, three hair colors right?  Let’s see I started with a reddish/brown hair color, then went blonde so I could go blue, then the blue faded really fast then I kept the blonde and the summer at the beach made it a nice blonde (according to my husband) then I got sick of that and went to a walnut blonde (which now is just gross) so it will soon be another yet to be named color.

So here I am 9 months after making the decision to go full-time into this crazy world of photography.  Do I have any regrets?  No, not yet?  I’m loving my freedom, from my psycho ex-boss, who get this….has been even more psychotic, but also get this…is gone in two days because her interim-ship (is that a word), is over in two days!!  Her position is being replaced by an actual person that knows how to run a non-profit organization, WOW imagine that!  Anyhow, since leaving those 9 months ago, the stress of that chaotic world, has caused me to refocus and loose 28 pounds, well not just the stress, I’m eating better and working out much more.  But the stress of not seeing that let’s call her a witch because it’s Halloween time, is AMAZING!

Plus I’m doing what I LOVE!!!  I have the freedom to be creative everyday.  What’s not to love?  I get to capture people at the most amazing times of their lives – getting married, creating families, sharing family moments – the list goes on.  I don’t know everything about photography, don’t claim to be the best, but I am learning, striving to be the best that I can and trying everyday to succeed.

Shannon & Frankie Married | Weddings by Heidi Hanson Photography

To say that this wedding was one wedding that I was most looking forward to this year, is an gross understatement.  I literally could not wait to photograph Shannon and Frankie’s wedding day.  Maybe it was because when I met them, we instantly clicked. Or was it that we shared an infinity for peacock feathers?  Or was it that we just laughed our asses off at the engagement session when it was two below zero?  One may never know, but this couple is just so special.  They are just so real and fun!

I think I laughed the entire wedding day, my cheeks hurt so much!  Enjoy!Image

i packed my bags last night preflight | Heidi Hanson Photography Specializing in Weddings

I just love those lyrics, they can mean so many things to so many people. To me it means possibilities, chance, potential, opportunities, a destination.  a fun place to go.  A new place to explore. Meet new people. New adventures. New opportunities.  2013 is a new and exciting year for Heid Hanson Photography. A year for me. A year of possibilities, chance, potential, opportunities, a destination.

I’m excited to announce this year I’m offering traveling as part of my wedding photography!  That’s right, now I can bring my awesomeness to you.  I realized after doing so many weddings in NY last year, that it only seemed natural to expand my borders to New England and beyond.  Already in October I’ll be heading west to Wisconsin and I cannot wait to taste all the local cheese (hoping that it truly is the cheese capital of US)!

New opportunities.

New adventures.

Stay tuned, 2013 is going to be amazing.

Have Courage | Connecticut Wedding Photography by Heidi Hanson

Anyone that knows me knows that I go through a lot of cell phone cases for my iPhone.  It’s not that I’m clumsy but it something that happens a lot.  Or my kids make it happen a lot or my multitasking causes it..yah I’ll blame it on that 🙂

When I say a lot I’d say that I go through about 6 cases a year.  One every two months on average.  Seems about right.

Of course I can’t get the industrial strength ones, b/c I want a cute one (i.e. cute = kate spade).

Now my phone I should say is in great shape.  Because usually when the phone drops the front goes one way, the back goes another way and my phone lands back down (not face).

So as usually more morning was hectic, kids got up late, didn’t want to go to school, barely anytime for breakfast, they wanted chips, you know the usually morning.

So as I dashed out of the shower and heard my phone go off, my slippery fingers botched the phone grab and smash…all over the bathroom floor.

Of course a few obscenities were said, but for some reason I stopped and read something.  Never having seen this before.

HAVE COURAGE

Courage: the quality of mind or spirit that enables a person to face difficulty.  Wow what great timing.

Okay so I only buy kate spade (did i mention cute) and this was the first time I had ever seen the inside of the back of my case.

I’m not sure why it caught my attention today, but it did, and I’m seeing it as a sign.

So as I go through my ever increasingly difficult day (week/year, lol), I’m trying to maintain courage.  Face my difficulties and get through them as best I can.  Because I will be stronger having faced them.

So to everyone out there, HAVE COURAGE in everything you do

Crossing off one item from my list | Heidi Hanson Photography Specializing in Weddings

It feels like forever since I’ve gone out on my own, well December was a while ago, so yeah I’ll go with forever 🙂

One of my main goals was really to focus on weddings, while I do love the babies and families, weddings are really where my passion lies.  Don’t worry folks, I will still do family sessions for you 🙂

So building my brand around weddings was a huge priority.  If you’ve been following me you see that I’ve got a new logo, which I love. Simple with a little funk…( love me some funky), it is my photography style.

I love capturing the little moments that happen throughout the day, moments that the newly married couple might not see.  Moments when captured in a photograph snap you right back to that day.

This is me and my style.

So without further ado we get to the title of this post….Crossing off one thing from my list…

The new website! Yeah! So excited to introduce you to my new site. It was a stressful time, but I made it through with some awesome tech support and my husband (who thinks he did the whole site, ha ha, he didn’t) but I can still give him a few props!

It still needs a few tweaks, but I really do love it. Simple, funky…it’s me…..So enjoy! And please feel free to pass along the new site to all your friends and family.
