Dimi and Nick a Seaside Affair by Heidi Hanson Photography

In all the world, there is no heart for me like yours.
In all the world, there is no love for you like mine.”
Maya Angelou

To say that Dimi and Nick were one of my favorite couples is an understatement!  They are fun, funny and perfect for each other.  The way they look at each other, you just can instantly feel the love between them, it gives me goosebumps!   Plus they are so easy to photograph.

Their wedding was so pretty and a ton of fun – here are a few of my favorite images from their big day:

Well, 2014 started and it is my first full week of the kids having school and me being 100% motivated to kick 2014 in the um, let’s say face! And what do you know….no house phone, no internet!  What???  Of course that happens!  I can’t even use my cell phone because those of you who know where I live, Easton…yes that’s in Connecticut!  It is in the woods, country land and there is one spot on my driveway that I have cell service, and um if you haven’t checked the weather lately, it’s was a a monsoon yesterday and today it is 6 degrees outside…so cross that spot off the list of my productivity places!

So um yea, instead I went grocery shopping, yeah favorite thing ever…NOT.  Except that I have started listening to Pandora with my earbuds to make it more enjoyable and it definitely is (especially without the kids there requesting everything or throwing things in the cart without me knowing).  Only downside is when I start belting out the chorus to some songs while picking out my yogurt – LOL

So I guess today was really an unplugged day when you think about it – literally unplugging the modem, plugging it back in, unplugging it, plugging it back in. Saying a little prayer or two hoping it would turn back on!  Never happening.  So instead of this long list of things I had hoped to accomplish – I bleached the master bath – woo hoo, did some ninja kicks on the cable wires in the basement, created something for dinner in the crockpot…who knows what that will taste like and created a really long to do list for January…….

Facing Your Fears | Heidi Hanson Photography

Today when I was running (after my husband convinced me at 7:30am that it wasn’t that  humid out, yet….um yeah he was totes lying); I was debating about this blog topic.  We all have fears, some of them were created from childhood like being afraid of the dark or maybe the basement, sleeping with the closet open (yep I passed that one down to my daughter, oops sorry Berkeley).  Some are much more larger and complicated.

Tomorrow I will be facing a big fear, a fear of failure.

  1. Lack of success.
  2. An unsuccessful person, enterprise, or thing.
  3. Me?

As I head back to work one last and time for a job that I left months ago.  In my other life I’m an event planner, I’ll be assisting a non-profit with their fundraising event for 200 people, outside, along the beautiful Long Island Sound.

So what does my fear of failure have to do with this situation you may ask?  Well, I have to see my old boss.  The main reason why I am no longer employed at said place.  I briefly saw her yesterday when I popped in to go over final details.  The funny part is, she didn’t recognize me.  Once she did a double take with her jaw literally wide-opened, she immediately began grilling me on all the details for tomorrow’s big fundraiser.  I was vague and polite, the best I could do under the given circumstances because I really wanted to reach out and slap her across the face or give her a pile driver.  You know how there’s that one person that has that power over you; to make you feel insignificant, trivial, inconsequential, stupid, etc.  yeah she’s MY one person.  And tomorrow night, I have to deal with her, all over again.  While I won’t be working the fundraiser for her per se, it is for the organization which she is leading, so I will have to please her, perhaps kiss her ass, or at least make sure she is happy, right?

WRONG!  I decided, not only during my run, but since I left this place months ago, I’m going to face my fears head on.  I’m going to do what I need to do to move forward.  So tomorrow night while I’m working, I will make sure the person who hired me is happy, has everything they need to be successful and not care about her and her happiness.  Tomorrow I will make a promise to not feel insignificant, stupid, trivial; I will stand up tall, feel important, valuable and not be afraid of failure.

Oh and I think I mentioned this event will be right on Long Island Sound, in fact, the event is benefiting clean water, so the back drop is the Norwalk Harbor; so if things start to go south, I am not above pushing her into the harbor, it will of course be high tide and my biggest finale of all time.

So for those of you out there with fears, no matter how big or small, stand up tall, look them in the eye and face them.  Look under that bed, sleep with the closet wide open, go into that basement with the lights off and push your ex-boss into Long Island Sound.  Because if you don’t you will live in fear the rest of your life.

Last Day | Heidi Hanson Photography

Last Day, wait, I should say the first day! Yes, the first day of the rest of my life! Wow that sounds so cheesy! Well it is, right? The first day of a new adventure, becoming my OWN boss, moving into full time photography (and wedding planning), and rocking it out!  Okay, yes it sounds cheesy.  But I like cheese, really I do, any kind of cheese.  Especially gouda.

So while I’m sitting at my desk, doing very little ‘work’ I’m busy thinking of all the fun things I have planned, writing down all my big ideas, hopes, dreams, wishes, anxieties (of which there are probably way too many), but I am not going to let that stop me.  For too long I have been in the con column (you know the list of pros and cons).  Not today, girlfriend!

Today, I’m rocking it, standing tall and proud at my mere 5’5″, wearing my yoga pants and favorite orange Cape Cod sweatshirt (just to piss off my anti-sweatshirt boss).  With my feet propped up on the desk, enjoying a diet coke.  I am going to enjoy my Last Day, not let anyone stand in my way of this dream that is finally coming true.  And how fitting is it that on this day in 1950, Disney released Cinderella?  Her dreams of meeting Prince Charming came true?  (okay so if you know me you know that my daughter is obsessed with princesses and barbies and them always meeting their price charming) So it only seems fitting that today is the day that my dream starts to come true!

So today, on February 15th this is my last day, I bid you adieu and I am going to leave you with this image of Jaclyn and Rich rocking it out at their wedding. One of my all-time favoritest couples, who inspire me everyday, to be better not just at photography, but at life.

Hump Day and Frogs | Connecticut Wedding Photography by Heidi Hansn

Wednesday is traditionally called hump day, which always makes me giggle a little.

C’mon you know you are giggling too!

For me, Wednesday isn’t the hump.

As a photographer I’m traditionally working all weekend long, which I guess would make Friday my hump!

Ok stop giggling!

I’m very excited for this after weekend. I get the opportunity to photography two boudoir sessions, with two fabulously, gorgeous, amazing and fun ladies! The weather should be fabulous, for maybe sneaking in a few outdoor photos!

It has been a yucky weather week in Connecticut this week.  Lots of rain, fog and frogs!

We have a pond in our front yard, which we love.  Many frogs, tadpoles and salamanders to catch! Having two small children and several nets, it can provide hours of entertainment.  The rain really brings these guys out!

Or should I say in?

We have this joke every year at my house, that when there is the perfect rain to fog ratio (and warmer weather) frogs attack our house.

You know like in that scary horror flick when zombies attack?  But much cuter!

Typically we find them creeping up our driveway in a swarm, or piled together on our deck.  Usually they are suctioned to our sliding glass doors, or our front windows.  However, this little guy picked a different spot.

My Golden Retriever’s food bowl!  He was so still, barely moved, even when Gage tried to eat him!  Hours later, he was tucked in, eyes closed, perfectly content.  Luckily he was gone by morning, so my dog didn’t inhale him as part of his breakfast!

Crossing off one item from my list | Heidi Hanson Photography Specializing in Weddings

It feels like forever since I’ve gone out on my own, well December was a while ago, so yeah I’ll go with forever 🙂

One of my main goals was really to focus on weddings, while I do love the babies and families, weddings are really where my passion lies.  Don’t worry folks, I will still do family sessions for you 🙂

So building my brand around weddings was a huge priority.  If you’ve been following me you see that I’ve got a new logo, which I love. Simple with a little funk…( love me some funky), it is my photography style.

I love capturing the little moments that happen throughout the day, moments that the newly married couple might not see.  Moments when captured in a photograph snap you right back to that day.

This is me and my style.

So without further ado we get to the title of this post….Crossing off one thing from my list…

The new website! Yeah! So excited to introduce you to my new site. It was a stressful time, but I made it through with some awesome tech support and my husband (who thinks he did the whole site, ha ha, he didn’t) but I can still give him a few props!

It still needs a few tweaks, but I really do love it. Simple, funky…it’s me…..So enjoy! And please feel free to pass along the new site to all your friends and family.

You are beautiful. Your true beauty lies in becoming yourself ~ Anonymous

I know a lot of us don’t like the way we look, myself included, but I’m working on that 😉

Boudoir shoots are fast becoming one of my favorite things to shoot.  Boudoir photo sessions are tasteful photos that hint at sexiness. They’re fun, sexy and all while maintain your comfort level. Plus they make a great gift for that special someone, for Valentine’s Day, your anniversary, Christmas or even as a deployment gift.

Typically boudoir sessions are done in the privacy of your home or in a hotel or friends house.  Sessions are usually around 2 hours and include multiple wardrobe changes.  You don’t have to be a size 0 to be sexy!  Look at Adele, she’s hot!

Boudoir sessions are also fun if you bring your friends, they also make for a great bachelorette party!  So today I wanted to announce that I’m doing a contest for a Boudoir Party!  Invite your friends to bring their sexy lingerie, hot high heels or their partner’s favorite football/baseball jersey.  Bring some bubbly and be prepared to have more fun than you thought possible!

So here’s how the contest works. You have to comment to this blog post and say why you’d like to host a boudoir party.  Winner will receive their session free!  All you have to do is invite four ladies to their party!  And if that isn’t enough the winner will also receive a mini-book from their session!  For your guests, each girl will pay $100 for the session and have the option of two outfits (more can be added for an additional fee), and a DVD of edited images from the shoot.  All photos will be placed on an online gallery for easy order (password protected of course)!

So all you have to do to win is just comment below about why you would love to host a boudoir party!  That’s it…winner will be chosen next week!  Girls it’s time to bring sexy back!!

Ugh the dreaded “B” word.

Yes this is something I should have done a while ago and was procrastinating, which is weird because I don’t generally think of myself as a procrastinator.

So one of my big hairy goals from Justin and Mary was re-branding, because I didn’t really have a ‘brand’ per se

In fact their advice was awesome, just keep a folder on your desktop and drag anything that catches your eye onto it…so I’ve gone one step further and made my own Pinterest board.  What did we ever do before Pinterest? We literally can plan entire weddings, find a cocktail recipe, ideas for birthday parties and what to make for dinner tonight on Pinterest.   Pure Genius!

I know yes I’m procrastinating, back to branding.

So orange, for as long as I can remember has been my favorite color. Literally the brighter the better.  Maybe not fluorescent, but definitely tangerine.  My high school graduation we all had to wear white (well the girls) and the boys had to wear red.  Well me being the rebel I am I had to be different….so I wore a pant suit (not a skirt like what we were supposed to), so you could see my pants below my cap and gown (oh the horror) and craziest orange shoes ever.  Oh I loved it and oh I heard crap about it from teachers, but really were they not going to let me graduate because of my shoe color??

So fast forward to college graduation, the rules were less rigid, so I went with a modest pair of fluorescent orange platforms and super, super short orange sun dress….those were the days. Loved those shoes…I think I still have them, hmmm….

Okay again procrastinating, so back to branding.

Orange, my color.

What looks great with orange?

I thought long and hard about this and research so many other places and google image searched and still found myself coming back to Pinterest.

So what looks great with orange?

OK, so now that I have the colors down I’ve been adding things to the “My Brand” board and have a decent idea of how this is all coming together.

But had I not been pushed by Justin and Mary, I can only imagine me ending up with purple and pink (ugh my two least favorite colors).  Which of course my daughter loves being a ‘girly girl.”

So orange and gray, here’s a little sneak peek….

Stay tuned for Branding Part II.

We all heard the news about Facebook buying Instagram for $1B…WOW!

Pretty cool though for a small company to be so amazingly popular that Facebook would want to buy it.  And not only can iPhone users utilize the app, it is also available for Android now.

I use Instagram every day, it is so easy and fun and it is a good way to keep your mind sharp!

I do a lot of driving every day.

I am fortunate that I live in such a beautiful part of the state and get to drive by the Saugatuck River, several reservoirs and lots of forests.  Lots of pretty things to capture instantly, and sometimes as I’m literally driving!  So I thought today I would share some of my favorite recent Instagram photos.  If you’re on Instagram be sure to follow me @heidihansonphotography

So here they are:
